SPLIT THE UNIVERSITY?
From the Lafayette Daily Advertiser of August 15th, 1965:
CHAMBER BOARD REAFFIRMS OPPOSITION TO USL MOVE
The Board of Directors of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce has reaffirmed its position opposing the move of the freshman class of the University of Southwestern Louisiana to New Iberia.
Meeting in executive session Friday, the board adopted a new resolution which President James E. Reed Jr. prepared for release this morning.
The resolution reads as follows:
"Be it resolved that the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Inc., acting through its duly elected and authorized board of directors, hereby reaffirms in all respects its resolution of August 18, 1964 opposing the proposal of the University of Southwestern Louisiana to transfer its entire freshman class to new facilities which the university proposes to establish on the site of the former Naval Air Station near New Iberia.
Be it further resolved that in our considered judgment the proposed transfer of said freshman class would be extremely detrimental to the best interests of the university, including its student body, from both an economic and an educational standpoint and that other plans should be developed for utilization of the former Naval Air Station which will not in any manner dilute the image, prestige and effectiveness of the university as now constituted.
Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be directed to the Governor of the State of Louisiana, to each member of the State Board of Education, to the State Superintendent of Public Education and to the President of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and that copies, hereof, be made available to all news media." - Lafayette Daily Advertiser 8/15/1965.

While the topic is very interesting, I think it was before many of our times for remembering.

Time period doesn't mean much. Maybe you took a break after high school and then entered the work force and went to school later? Anyway its gonna be a lazy day around this household. I would only show up if good food and a good game/event was involved. (football, baseball, softball, track or drag racing) Maybe I could borrow your dog to go hunting with?

Not much to hunt right now either. By the way, my dog does not hunt without me. I do cook pretty good, love to drink cold beer and have a hell of a dog, however.

It was more of a compliment that you had a good looking healthy dog. As far as cooking I leave that mostly up to the wife. I love cold beer but only at a live sporting event, playing live music, at a restaurant or cookout. Can't drink beer just to drink beer.

Thanks for this Frenchie. Just for the record this was way before my time. Unfortunately for some people they missed the best 20 year span of time in US and thus world history. The two decades 1948-1968 were indeed Happy Days. The ending of WWII with the US the sole super power released the greatest economic and human rights growth ever. Thanks mostly to White Privilege America.

Ah, the chamber. The same brain trust that pushed for consolidation and now hides over in One Acadiana, once again, leaving Lafayette with no autonomy. They've done such a fine job with I-49...pretty much anything they support, I'll be against. We could of had our own junior college.

Being a junior then, seemed like a great opportunity to expand. But was sure fun to watch as we grew rapidly in 60s. Wouldn’t have been much fun for students to bus from NI for football and basketball games. Most of us felt it would have made for a killer regional airport with that runway!!

The Chamber of Commerce then is not the Chamber of Commerce now. They were much better back then. SPLIT THE UNIVERSITY? Thanks for this Frenchie. Just for the record this was way before my time. Another "once in a lifetime" opportunity wasted. The (then) USL administration worked hard and pulled all political muster it could round up to get the New Iberia Naval Air Station reassigned to the university. Lots of trips and time spent in DC getting papers signed/property transferred. The base only operated for ~5 years before it was decommissioned so all the facilities/buildings were new. They had 1000 military personnel operating on the base and it consisted of over 4300 acres. This was all at the time when USL was starting establishing itself as a research and graduate university. The goal was to move "junior division" to the NI campus and have the colleges and graduate school at the main campus in Lafayette. The longer term strategy was to establish a true junior college in NI as a feeder to the university. The JC system they were looking at implementing was modeled after the very successful Florida system. Unfortunately, politics soon came into play and the university decided not to fight the movement against the campus in NI. The big challenge came with Gov McKeithen got involved and 1/2 the naval station property ended up in the names of most of his friends. The other half became Acadiana Regional Airport.

The old Navy airport...exactly why the Chamber wanted no part of this. Made too much sense to have a military grade airport serve the region instead of our land locked LFT. So much growth potentional wizzed away. That complex is huge. To attest to the strength of the runways...the military simply sealed the entrances to the tunnels under the runways and left.

Very simple. The Lafayette Chamber did not want any part of the university to be established outside of Lafayette.
