Neither Republicans or Democrats should be changing and destroying a system in place that has served this country so well for more than 200 years!

The filibuster has not been “serving the people” for 200 years. Not even close. It’s been used by mostly the right over the last 20 years to stymie progression legislation, actually.

Sounds like it has been serving the people well and in times like right now it is most needed to serve the people.

IMHO, the best thing that could happen for the American people at this point in time would be gridlock in Washington! Better for nothing to happen than what is going on now.

At the very least the filibuster requires extensive reform. Our legislative branch basically ties its hands behind its back with the existence and growing use of the filibuster.
So the bad news is that legislation is stifled significantly, but the advantage is that the minority party's voice is heard.
I guess abolishing it completely is a nod towards majority rule, which would make congressional/senate elections more important and likely bring both parties closer to the middle....maybe? The filibuster allow the loonies on both sides to grind progress to a halt.

The 50 Dems in the Senate represent about 40 million more people than the Rs do. That is not really a democracy, is it? And no, I do not need a civics lesson. I get that the point of the Senate is to give small states an equal voice but this might be overdone. Especially in our current political climate where it seems Dems will work with Rs but not the other way around. The GOP has consistently shown that they do not want to govern for the American people. They are only interested in preserving power. Re: McConnell's' statement about the goal of the Senate being to deny Obama a 2nd term and Re: McConnel allowing dozens of House bills to die without a vote. If our grand experiment has come to a power grab by the majority party, I say blow the effing thing up and maybe, just maybe, we can get back to being the Greatest Deliberative Body.

Mitch McConnell + filibuster = gridlock. The guy has set our country back 50 years all by himself.

The closer we try to become a true democracy the closer we get to extinction. The founders created a messy system to force a more balanced federal system. A true democracy can’t survive. Started with Ancient Greece. Bad path to follow. I do like the requirement to go back to the days of a person at the dais filibustering. No digital stuff.
